When to Use a DNS Lookup

• After you move a site. Check that the A record points to your new host.
• When email stops. Check that the MX records point to your mail provider.
• Before you switch providers. Save a copy of every record, so nothing gets lost.
• When a service asks you to verify. Check that the TXT record you added is live.

Why You Might See Old Answers

DNS answers are saved for a while to keep the internet fast. The TTL column shows how many seconds an answer may be kept. If you just made a change, some people may see the old answer until that time runs out.

This tool asks Cloudflare's public DNS service, so it shows what most of the internet sees. Your own computer may still hold an older answer.

Common Questions

What is the difference between A and CNAME?

An A record points a name to an IP address. A CNAME points a name to another name. Most DNS hosts do not allow a CNAME on the bare domain, so the bare domain usually gets an A record.

How long do DNS changes take?

Often a few minutes. Some people may see the old answer until the old TTL runs out, which can be up to a day or two if it was set long.

Why does my domain show no records?

The domain may have a typo, may not be registered, or may have no DNS set up yet. If you just bought it, check the name servers at your registrar.

Is this DNS lookup free?
